Sacred Heart Garden Festival

The annual Sacred Heart Garden Festival launched with a Preview Party held at the cultural center. Healthy BBQ and red wine in hand, I gazed at the landscape designs in the outside tent. It's obvious the "theme" for this year-- sustainability and good ole down to earth gardening.

Chickens, water features, corn, strawberries and rest stops- all incorporated in this year's garden designs. Congratulations to Jane Waldrop for her classic landscape design below as winner of the Bert Botts' Professional Award.

see you

Renee W. wins the ticket to see Ryan Gainey at the Augusta Country Club this Wednesday morning at 10:30am. Coffee & conversation with the eclectic Mr. Gainey is sure to be a hit!   Here is Renee's winning comment:

Let's be a realist, I am not the greatest gardener.

In my dreams I am retired and living in Key West with a convertible, plenty of books to read, lots of great wine to drink and the perfect little garden to work in every day. But today I am a frazzled housewife with four kids, a "station wagon", cheap wine and a yard full of weeds. Last year I found an awesome 5 ft grapevine tree that someone had thrown out on McDowell Street. I shoved it in my car and drove home slowly with the back open. Yesterday I finally found the perfect place for it in the yard and planted a beautiful climbing mandevilla that my mother in law gave me for Easter.

I cannot wait to see it grow! Happy Spring!

Home & Garden Show

The Augusta Home & Garden Show appeared to be a big hit this year!
I had a great time speaking to other homeowners and gardeners about a variety of subjects.
Even had a taste of "local" wine!

Lasagna Garden Prep

In nursing school the first thing we were drilled
on was to "gather supplies" before entering our
patient's room.

Well, that is what this week
is about for our first lasagna garden.
I've asked the neighborhood yard men to
save chopped leaves and mowed winter grass.
Just bought a large bag of peat moss and a
bag of composted manure.

My friends have supplied me with cardboard and
newspapers which start the process as the bottom
"layer" to the lasagna!

I think this concept will be a great attraction for
new gardeners in April during the Sacred Heart
Garden Festival's home garden tour.

Did you say, "huh"? Details on this method to follow.

Will report.
Blessings from the Garden.
